Apple customers who are eligible for payouts from the tech giant’s settlement of a 2018 class action lawsuit have started receiving their money. Announcements from an attorney for the plaintiffs and social media posts indicate the distributions are underway and are expected to conclude by late January.

Apple’s Settlement Details

Apple agreed to pay a settlement for actions that affected the performance of older iPhone models following an update. The compensation amount ranges between $310 million and $500 million, and each claimant is receiving approximately $92. This settlement has been recognized as the largest all-cash recovery in a computer intrusion case in history.

Eligibility and Claim Filing Window

Only individuals who filed their claims by late 2020 are eligible to receive payments from this settlement. If you have not submitted a claim by this deadline, unfortunately, you will not qualify for compensation.

Background of the iPhone Lawsuit

The lawsuit, which was filed more than five years ago, accused Apple of attempting to conceal battery defects in older iPhone models by releasing an update that reduced the phones’ performance. It’s estimated that around 100 million users were affected by this action. Although Apple has not admitted to any wrongdoing, its efforts to appeal the settlement were rejected by the U.S. circuit court.

Compensation Amount Per Claimant

Eligible claimants are receiving $92.17 for each affected device, which has exceeded initial estimates and represents full claimed damages.
